The Story of Waxed Cotton
With Ronnie Romance at Halley Stevensons

Waxed cotton has its roots in the sea. As far back as the 15th century, Scottish herring fishermen treated their sails with fish oils and grease to help them withstand wind and water. Worn-out pieces of sailcloth were then repurposed as capes, offering the same protection from sea spray to the men on deck.
The methods have evolved considerably since, but the principle remains much the same: take a strong natural cloth and give it added protection from the elements without losing the character of the cotton beneath.
For Ronnie Romance, there is something fitting about those maritime origins.
“Sailing products end up making really good rugged outdoor materials. Things that last a lifetime, things that are meant to be in the elements, things that become better with age.”

So we took Ronnie to the holy grail of the stuff: Halley Stevensons in Dundee, Scotland, our trusted supplier, to follow the cloth through production and see how the fabric behind some of his favourite shorts is made.
What surprised him was the meeting of old principles and modern production: chemistry, enormous machinery and, still, a remarkable amount of human touch.
As Ronnie puts it, there is “more than meets the eye for a traditional fabric.”
To make sense of it all, we’ve broken the process down into six key stages.


01 — The Cotton
It begins with tightly woven cotton, selected for its strength, durability and natural feel. Its dense construction provides the foundation for the wax finish while allowing the character of the cloth to remain.
The scale is striking. Rolls passing through the factory can contain 2,500 to 3,000 metres of fabric at a time before being divided into smaller lengths for manufacturers.

02 — Singeing
Before the wax ever touches the cotton, the cloth passes quickly over an open flame in a process known as singeing.
The flame burns away loose fibres and surface fuzz, leaving a cleaner, smoother surface for the stages ahead. It happens in seconds, but it is one of the many small details that determine how evenly the finished cloth will take its treatment.

03 — Dyeing & Preparation
The cotton is dyed to achieve its base colour and prepared for finishing. The aim is to create an even cloth that will accept the wax consistently while retaining its natural texture.
There is more science involved than Ronnie expected. Dye recipes are developed in the laboratory, while salt and other treatments help the colour penetrate the cotton fibres evenly.
By the time the cloth reaches the waxing machines, its colour, surface and construction have all been carefully prepared.

04 — The Wax
Then comes the part Ronnie is most fascinated by. The cloth is warmed over large heated rollers before passing through hot wax. Standing beside the machinery, Ronnie compares the heat to being in a sauna.
There is no single recipe for waxed cotton. Halley Stevensons uses different wax formulations depending on the weight, intended use and desired character of the finished cloth. Different treatments can produce different levels of softness, sheen and texture while adding protection against wind and wet weather.
For Ronnie, the basic principle is familiar from re-waxing garments at home: warm the material, work in the wax and let it cool. Here, the same idea has been refined and scaled across kilometres of cloth.
From the hot wax, the fabric moves directly onto cold rollers, where it rapidly cools as condensation gathers across the machinery.
A sauna followed by a cold plunge, as Ronnie describes it.

05 — Setting the Finish
The wax is worked into the cloth and carefully set. Heat, pressure, cooling and finishing help distribute the treatment evenly, creating the distinctive feel and weather resistance of waxed cotton.
For all the scale of the machinery, the process remains surprisingly hands-on.
As the fabric leaves the cooling rollers, an operator checks it by hand to make sure it has cooled enough to be rolled. If it is still too warm, the layers can stick together.
Ronnie had expected a factory like this to be almost entirely automated. Instead, experience, judgement and touch remain an essential part of the process.
Further finishing can change the cloth again. Tumbling and other treatments alter softness, texture and appearance, meaning waxed cotton is far from one single thing. Handling the samples, Ronnie sees just how much the same basic material can be transformed by its finish.

06 — Made to Age
Halley Stevensons has been producing textiles at its Dundee site since 1864. That history matters to Ronnie.
He sees waxed cotton alongside wool and leather: materials developed for a time when clothing and equipment were expected to withstand weather, wear, maintenance and repair.
Waxed cotton is not meant to remain pristine. It creases, marks and subtly changes tone. The areas that see the most use begin to tell their own story. When its protection starts to fade, the cloth can be reproofed. When it is damaged, it can be repaired.
Wear becomes part of its character rather than the end of its life.
For Ronnie, that slow transformation is the point.
“You don't appreciate something unless you've put time in on it.”
He compares it to a leather bicycle saddle, gradually shaped by the rider over years of use. The best objects become increasingly personal.
“There's your body's imprints, your DNA is all over them. And that's what makes a product special.”
The visit to Halley Stevensons gave Ronnie more than an understanding of how wax is applied to cotton. It connected a material he already loved to the people, machinery and generations of knowledge behind it — and showed how a centuries-old idea continues to make sense today.
