THE HISTORY OF MOLESKIN

The predecessor of denim – Moleskin is a hard-wearing cotton fabric, densely woven and brushed for a soft, almost suede-like surface. As the name suggests, it has a feel reminiscent of a mole’s skin, despite being made entirely from cotton.

Born in the industrial mills of England and perfected in the textile workshops of France, moleskin bridges utility and refinement. For generations, it was worn by farmers, factory workers and craftsmen across Europe. In Britain, it became known for its strength and warmth. In France, it was widely used for work jackets and trousers, often in the deep blue associated with bleu de travail, the classic French chore coat. Like denim in America, moleskin became part of Europe’s workwear tradition: practical, comfortable and made to improve with age.
