media serendipity
i had the luck of catching several of my favorite media items all this past sunday. first, the local public broadcasting station was playing the 1956 movie Giant. i've attached a clip of one of my favorite scenes. check the last few seconds when James Dean does a rope trick. amazing.
next, i caught an old recording of the Oscar Treadwell radio show covering jazz great Eric Dolphy. among several great recordings, he played Dolphy's rendition of "God Bless the Child." again, amazing. below is another video clip w/ Eric doing the same tune.
finally, on the way home late sunday night, i heard a 1985 radio session w/ Marian McPartland and Henry Mancini. i grew up w/ Mancini scores. much of my work while a college music major was influenced by his movie scores. it was great to hear the old tunes and hear him telling stories. i even discovered that i learn my first scoring techniques from the same Frank Skinner book. below is a link to the radio episode. priceless.
it was a pretty good day.
