subbu's follow-on post on this issue points to a possible solution - implement an 'atom-like' pattern for JSON. it's got possibilities.

i'm still kinda stuck on how to properly represent hypermedia links in JSON. i only found this and this that seem to acknowledge the issue, but nothing definitive emerges.

looks like what is really needed is a new pattern that will end up expressed as a custom media-type (application/hypermedia+json) or some such thing.
