Nicholas Allen pointed out that RFC1049 turns 20 years old this month. originally called Content Types, they later came to be known as MIME Types and/or Media Types.
frequent readers will notice that i've posted a couple times recently on the importance of IANA managed media types and how essential they are to building REST-compliant HTTP engines.
