released from 64kb hell

creepy for some reason, our cable connection was reduced to 64kb/sec about a week ago. we were on break up north for part of that time, but were unable to RDP into the home server, etc. also, loading things like photos, etc. was excruciating[grin].

more annoying (really) was the fact that we got very little help from the local cable operator. it kinda doesn't help that we know what is going on more often than they do [sigh]. i left this mess to jesse. he's got the skills, if not the patience, to handle it. he also has connections further up the chain at the cable company (long story...).

anyway, this afternoon, jesse bounded into the room exclaiming someone at the cable company had contacted him (via chat) and was working on the problem. sure enough, after some voodoo and magic with cables and reset buttons, we were back to 10Mbps/sec. turns out provision for our router was failing. jesse had to change the mac address here by direct connecting to a laptop; getting the new config; then re-connecting to the router again. all magic to me.

anyway, we're back and we all love it. now i've got a bunch of things i need to get cracking on in order to make up for lost time!
