long day's journey
i watched Long Day's Journey Into Night last night. not the 1962 Sidney Lumet version, but the 1987 Jonathan Miller version. it was the only version available at my local library. and i must admit i was disappointed at first. but this version was really very good. it was nice to see it done a bit differently. with a different cast. brought something things out for me that i'd not seen before.
for example, this time around, i found this line very enlightening:
Urged to forget the past, Mary asks, "How can I? The past is the present, isn't it? It's the future, too."
while i've always known that the past was an important part of the play, this time around i saw "the past" as a full character on stage. all the characters talk about it. all have regrets. all have something in their past they are avoiding.
anyway, great rendition of the play.
