2006-04-29 selected bivy tents

finally pulled the trigger on the last big-ticket item - sleeping bivies. like the other major purchases, i ended up selecting low-priced and moderately-priced items. the low-price bivy i selected is the guide gear solo bivy tent. amazon offred it for $25 before shipping. the moderately-priced bivy i selected is the eureka! solitaire. amazon offered it for $51 - a very good price.

general notes

keep it as light as possible. less than 4lbs for a two-man, @2lbs for a single
single, sleeping-bag-sized tents are called bivy sacks or bivy tents.
make sure you know your goals. you want to protect against rain? cold? bugs?
you can find inexpensive summer bivy tents for under $50. some even hold two people.
more expensive all season, lightweight (less than 2lbs) models can run up to $200.
