purchased a trail map for the caesar creek, oh area (one hour north of our house) from the buckeye trail organization. they offer 26 maps covering a loop around the state of ohio. downside of this area is that is has several paved bike paths. upside is that it leads to a full campground and has (according to the website) 20 miles of off-road hiking.

hueston woods, oh

another nice location close to home (less than an hour away). has about 7 mi of hiking trails - not a lot - but it is also close to the american discovery trail that stretches across the united states. nice park map. details about the park including some photos are available at the ohio dnr web site. could be a nice place to take a short trip and explore a bit of the discovery trail.

caesar creek, oh

a pretty nice area *very* close to home (about an hour away). has about 12 mi of hiking trails and 24 miles of hiking/horse trails. check out a nice park map. details about the park including some photos are available at the ohio dnr web site. there is also a nice campground map that shows several places that seem 'out of the way' but stil within the campground area. one challenge is that the good hiking trails are at one end of the park and the camping area is at the other end. no clear way to get between the two can be seen on these simple maps. a more detailed (county/topo?) map might show some routes, tho.

red river gorge and big south, ky

a nice site covering backpacking in ky, tn, il, and in. red river gorge and big south fork both sound like the best options in the state.

gorp ky

the gorp web site has lots of details on trails throughout the united states. there's a deatiled list of trails w/ lengths, terrain, directions, etc. the kentucky trail list has a few interesting items. the sheltowee trace seems the most promising with 4.9 mi, 5.3 mi, 9.9 mi, and 10.6 mi loops. all are in the danial boone forest about 90 minutes south of lexington.

gorp oh

the gorp site lists two trails in ohio. neither sounds great, but the one south of columbus sounds like a possibility. a bit easier terrain than the ky ones - maybe not as pretty, tho.

buckeye trial

this web site covers the buckeye trail which goes almost entirely around the state of ohio. intersting idea and some good information here. but seems like (at last some of) the trails will be along roads and through towns. not so much fun, i think.

hoosier national forest, in

near bedford, in (three hours east of erlanger), the hoosier forest has quite a bit of trails. most of them were design for horses, but they allow hikers, too. a few camping areas are available. they also permit wilderness camping along the trails. they also sell waterproof topo maps of the area.
